Well we’re back from a wonderful time in London and another year at the Tête à Tête Festival. The performances went great, the audiences were enthusiastic and over all it was a rousing success. And Your Call... was named "One of the Best Fringe Operas of 2015." Granted it was a race to the finish. Always is. But with a brilliant cast and crew and the help of some very good friends we did it.
The addition of the wonderful Hai-Ting Chinn to the cast was even better than I’d hoped it would be. Stepping into a company who’ve been developing a work together for three years is not easy. We are a kind of comically dysfunctional family. But she fit in seamlessly and brought an incredible richness to the piece.
And now I am delighted to welcome the very talented British Mezzo Soprano Emily Gray to the cast of Your Call… Emily has appeared on numerous radio and TV broadcasts in the UK, and toured extensively. Her album ‘Passiontide’ reached number 8 in the classical charts and was nominated for two Brit Awards. You can read her complete bio here. Emily is a brilliant artist, a delightful person, and I am thrilled she is joining the company.
As always, choreographer Joy Kellman brings an insight to the physical qualities of the work that I could never achieve on my own. Just as importantly she has suffered hours of listening to me brainstorm my way through a morass of ideas and helped me to narrow and focus those ideas into an actual piece.
The video projections by Obie Award winning artist Hannah Wasileski added a very special edge to the piece this time. It is beautiful work that she made in a surprisingly short space of time. We are already talking about how the video can be expanded and integrated differently in future productions.
A very special thanks to the amazing Lisa J. Coates, who’s been with me since the very beginning of this project and has been pivotal to the development Your Call…. Her incredible talent and intelligence have contributed more to this work than I can express. Your Call… would literally not be the same without her. Thanks Lisa.
To everyone who helped us along the way, you have my undying gratitude. Making a work as large and complex as Your Call… is always the result of many generous people who contribute in a variety of ways. We couldn’t have done it without you.
Stay tuned. There’s more to come. As always I learned a lot from these performances and we’re already planning an updated and extended version of Your Call… I’ll keep you posted as events develop.
